Curved frames start as plywood ribs

A curved sofa is not bent out of one piece of timber. Its line is built up, rib by rib.

Frame builders shape plywood ribs for curved sofas at FURX benches, with stacked curved frames behind.
FIG 00Frame workshop: plywood ribs are shaped and set into the spine of a curved sofa frame.PhotographyFURX

In the frame workshop, the curve of a sofa is carried by ribs: half-discs of plywood shaped at the bench and set at intervals along a spine. The spine fixes the length; the ribs give the back its profile. Behind the benches, finished curved frames are stacked and waiting for the upholstery line.

Everything that comes later, from springs and foam to the cover, follows the shape set here.
