Veneer is wood sliced into thin leaves. In marquetry, those leaves are cut into pieces and fitted together like a flat mosaic, so the picture comes from the grain and colour of the wood itself, not from paint.

On 22 August 2026, two craftsmen in the veneer section were laying this panel on a large board. The design was drawn on the base and the pieces were numbered; each one was cut from a veneer leaf with a knife and a steel straightedge, then set against its neighbours FIG 01.

A craftsman holds a leaf of light veneer over the drawn outline of a hand on the marquetry base, with laid pieces and a steel straightedge around it.

The next day it hung finished on the wall of the section, above the FURX letters: a star at the centre, two hands reaching in from either side.
